Friday Ramble.....

My fine feathered friend came to Lettuce Lake this morning. The Roseate Spoonbill is classified as a large wading bird.  I have called them cranes.  Read and learn, show and tell. It’s all fun.

About the Spoonbill:

• Two and a half feet in length.
• Wingspan is four and half feet across.
• The male is slightly larger with a longer bill.
• White face and chest, pink wings and legs, black feet.
• Spoonbill feed in shallow water, opening its bill swishing side     to side in the water, sifting food.
• Roseate Spoonbill get their color from the food they eat.  Crustaceans and algae.
• Texas, Louisiana and southern Florida are home for the Spoonbill.
• Their habitats are mangrove swamps, tidal ponds, saltwater lagoons and other brackish water.
• The pair build a large deep nest of sticks, leaves, and grass.  The favorite nesting is in colonies.  Laying 2 - 4 eggs both parents incubate the eggs. Both feed babies until they are eight weeks old.  Maturity until three years old. 
• These tropical birds are silent and often feed alone.
• Their lifespan can be ten years.

Much a surprise to myself, I could be a tree hugging, bird watching, earth loving, picture taking, old woman, a crone.
